Politics and Religion – Where the Spiritual Rubber Meets the Dirty Road

We bristle at using the words “politics” and “religion” in the same sentence. Everyone’s all tied up about being politically correct or winning votes, or defending their beliefs. I used to believe that politics and religion should stay in their separate corners – quite as different as night and day. But now that I’ve actually been involved in the political process I can tell you this: there is no place where religion is more sorely needed than in politics. And here’s another thing: if every politician who blabbed incessantly about his or her faith, going to Church, and belief in the Bible (or whatever) actually acted in accordance with those beliefs we sure wouldn’t be in this pickle.

Politics needs to be overflowing with religion; not the proselytizing, preaching, mean-spirited, hard headed, “my way or the highway” nonsense folks try to pawn off as religion, but the real deal. Love, respect, decency, compassion, understanding, and kindness: these are the hallmarks of most spiritual practices. Unfortunately, it’s often the most “religious” people who show the least of these qualities. Why don’t folks just walk the walk, like my political/spiritual heroes: Mother Teresa, Mahatma Gandhi, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, and the Dalai Lama. They are

Before you read on, you all take the time to challenge the above statistics? Probably not. It is generally easier to order others to “think for us.”
